THESIS
San Galgano Abbey, Italy
3 300 m²
DEC 2025
Set within the historic ruins of San Galgano Abbey, this thesis project explores how community can be rebuilt through shared food-related rituals rooted in the land. Cultivation, preparation and collective meals become tools for connection, using food as a medium through which people meet, learn and belong. The abbey’s open structure and enduring material presence create a setting where past and present naturally converge.
New architectural elements are introduced with restraint, shaped by the rhythms, scale and atmosphere of the ruin. They form spaces for growing, cooking, gathering and learning – spaces that make visible the processes behind everyday nourishment and reconnect people to where food comes from.
The proposal positions the community center as a bridge between heritage and contemporary needs, where materiality, program and shared food practices work together to restore a sense of belonging rooted in landscape, labor and collective experience.
